    The Federal Reserve

The Federal Reserve (aka The Fed) is the central bank of the U.S.A. The Fed was established in 1913 after the financial panics of 1907 whereby people raced to their banks to withdraw their deposits. The Fed comprises of:

  • A Board of Governors (presidentially appointed)

  • A Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC)

  • 12 regional Federal Reserve Banks

  • By 2008 the US banking system had got into alot of trouble over loans backed by real-estate assets. Much criticism has been levied at the Fed for failing to act after the famous Alan Greenspan "irrational exhuberance" speech of December 1996. Perhaps this was due to political intervention? Nevertheless, failing to act allowed stock and real-estate asset bubbles to inflate further. By suppressing US interest rates to 50 year lows after 9/11 further allowed parabolic asset bubble inflation.

By attempting to control rising inflation by raising interest rates, central banks will cause unemployment to rise and business activity to decline.

A global commodity inflationary cycle has been underway during the first decade of the 21st century. The US Federal Reserve's 2005 attempt to "control" inflation by raising rates hard has caused millions to lose their homes, unemployment to rise and recession. They have had to restore lower rates again so losing the battle against inflation and the confidence of the markets.
